Case Study

FIRETEX® M90/02 Protects Oil and Gas Field Development

Sherwin-Williams provides fire protection for the Johan Castberg floating production storage and offloading (FPSO)

The Johan Castberg Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) topsides and process modules project – which is owned by Equinor, designed by Aker Solutions AS and being constructed by Kvaerner AS – consists of the development of three fields Skrugard, Havis and Drivis in the Barents Sea located approximately 240 km from Hammerfest in Norway.

The water depth is approximately 380 m. The FPSO is a self-contained unit including living quarters and with all necessary process, utility and hull systems for operation in a harsh
Barents Sea environment. The FPSO will be permanently moored by means of an internal turret mooring system.

Challenge

With the fabrication of the topsides and process modules for the project taking place across five locations throughout Norway and Poland, it meant the construction of the FPSO required seamless lines of communication 24/7 and effective cross-border coordination between multiple teams of different engineering contractors including the team at Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings.

Solution

The well-proven fire protection FIRETEX brand and its hydrocarbon protection product M90/02 was chosen for its ease-of-application, while the Sherwin-Williams technical team provided training, support and inspection in multiple locations across Europe.

Mikael Wendel, Regional Sales Manager, Northern Europe, project manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, said: “We are proud to have professionally delivered the passive fire protection scope of the project at the most optimised cost to the contract chain and in a timely manner with excellence in safety and quality standards.

Our high level of teamwork with the design engineer, Aker Solutions AS, and the construction contractor, Kvaerner AS, played an important role in completing this “fast track” task in hand. Careful project execution planning and forecasting was key in providing safety and quality standards.

“The credit goes to project engineers, procurement teams, construction engineers and applicators of the contractors as well as the production, customer service, warehousing and technical teams at Sherwin-Williams EMEAI.”

FIRETEX M90/02 provides up to four hours of fire protection, while providing a corrosion-resistant protective coating for the design life of the asset. With low spray applied density, reduced film build requirements and high performance properties, FIRETEX M90/02 is highly recommended for both onshore and offshore structures.

Outcome

According to Mikel, the FIRTEX M90/02 system will give the desired fire protection and corrosion protection needed for the harsh environment the FPSO will operate in.

The project was successfully delivered across the various locations in Northern Europe.

We have used Sherwin-Williams’ FIRETEX brand of intumescent passive fire protection in other projects in previous years, so we were aware of the quality of the material.
