Suzanne Bloom [00:00:16] Hello and welcome to our first episode of Coating Chats. My name is Suzanne Bloom, and today we have Jeff Kubala with us to talk about coatings for metal closures. Jeff is an account manager with Sherwin-Williams and has been with us for twenty-eight years. Hello, Jeff, welcome, thank you for being on today's episode. So why don't you start by telling us more about yourself and your career at Sherwin?
[GFX: Jeff Kubala, Account Manager/Sales]
Jeff Kubala [00:00:39] Thanks, Suzanne. I'm happy to be here today. I started in the lab as a technician in the product development group. But working in the lab, I needed to attend customer trials. I learned during those customer visits that the relationship of partnering and working through issues together was very rewarding. So, in 2012, I made the full transition from lab to sales. Now I'm an account manager. I support my customers through technical service, new product introductions and day to day maintenance of business. I support accounts that make various styles of metal closures. Examples are lug, press twists, and continuous thread.
Suzanne Bloom [00:01:18] Wow Jeff, it sounds like you've had quite the career at Sherwin-Williams. So, with all the knowledge that you gained, can you tell us more about how coatings helped to both protect and decorate metal closures?
Jeff Kubala [00:01:28] Sure. Containers with metal closures hold food, which range from mild, medium to aggressive, and we supply coatings that withstand a full range of food types. For example, the coating requirements for jelly is much different than for a pickle or pepper product. Pickles and peppers contain vinegar. So, coatings protect against the naturally corrosive nature of these foods. These aggressive food types may require two or even three coating passes. Sherwin-Williams provides non-BPA and other coating technologies to help keep food well-preserved and provide good shelf stability. On the other side of the closure of the external coatings are for the decoration of the metal and appeal to brands and ultimately consumers. They also protect the outside of the metal closure during the filling operations and transportation to stores. Sherwin-Williams supplies a range of external coatings. White, gold, and clear, as well as full line of gloss and matte varnishes.
Suzanne Bloom [00:02:27] It's great to hear that we have so many coating solutions for closures. So, can you tell us, are there any differences in the coatings required for the different types of caps? You mentioned the lug, press twist, and continuous thread caps.
Jeff Kubala [00:02:41] Yes, each cap style has its own requirements due to differences in fabrication processes and food types being filled. Our coatings need to meet all these application and fabrication requirements as well as regional regulatory needs.
Suzanne Bloom [00:02:56] So, Jeff, I have one final question for you. As you know, at Sherwin-Williams, we are extremely customer focused. So, can you tell me what your customers value about our coatings?

Jeff Kubala [00:03:07] Evaluate the performance of the internals so brand owners can be confident in what they are selling, as well as the presentation and shelf appeal of the external coatings. We also offer support to our customers, including on-site technical service, application advice, coating recommendations, and regulatory expertise.
Suzanne Bloom [00:03:29] Jeff, thanks so much for the great overview of the coatings and support that we offer to the metal closures market. And to the audience watching, I hope that you'll join us for another episode of Coating Chats.
