valPure FAQs

What is valPure?

valPure is the Sherwin-Willimas Packaging Coatings Division umbrella brand name for non-BPA coating technologies. valPure includes three technology platforms: non-BPA epoxy, polyester and acrylic. We are very proud of these valPure coatings - they provide a large portfolio of coating solutions to meet customer and brand owner needs across all light metal packaging can types.  We continue to innovate and challenge ourselves  to  create new technologies to meet our customer needs now and  in the future.

Why are you making these new non-BPA* coatings?

While global food safety agencies continue to review and affirm BPA’s safety as a component material used in the development of coatings for food packaging, regulators in some parts of the world and market preferences have underscored the need for non- BPA options. Therefore, we give our customers coating choices enabling them to continue using our traditional coatings, or coatings that are non-BPA.

How do you ensure that valPure coatings do not contain BPA?

The polymers used in valPure technologies are created without the use of BPA.

What process was used in formulating valPure coatings?

Safety by Design, is the product development protocol developed by Sherwin-Williams that is focused on the early screening of materials for regulatory and environmental compliance. The Safety by Design protocol uses the pharmaceutical process as a model. This process emphasizes food packaging safety, performance and global regulatory compliance. More information on our development process can be found below.

Where are valPure coating technologies approved for use?

Sherwin-Williams valPure non-BPA* technologies have more than 100 approvals around the world. See regulatory information on product pages or click here for more information.

Where can valPure coatings be applied?

There is a valPure coating available for virtually every application in the light metal packaging industry, including beverage cans and ends, 2-piece and 3-piece food cans and ends, closures, aluminum tubes and monobloc cans. More information can be found here.

Why use metal packaging?

Metal packaging is a highly sustainable material with an infinite life cycle. No other package type provides a longer shelf life, better preserves product quality and offers greater protection against spoilage than light metal packaging.
