Carbon Capture Coatings & Linings
Protecting the infrastructure in the carbon capture industry
What are Carbon Capture Coatings & Linings?
To address the challenge of reducing global carbon dioxide emissions, companies are investing in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) initiatives. This process involves capturing carbon dioxide from emission sources, such as electricity or natural gas-fired plants before it can enter the atmosphere. Captured carbon is either repurposed for various applications or transported via pipelines and stored deep underground— both onshore and offshore. The pipelines utilized for carbon dioxide transportation and the tanks utilized for storage are equipped with specialized coatings and linings to prevent corrosion and optimize the system's flow efficiency.
Sherwin-Williams protective coating and lining solutions are designed to combat corrosion and chemical degradation while improving flow efficiency — both offering reduced operational costs. Choosing the correct coatings will be dependent on knowing which part of the phase diagram your products are in during transportation and which environment your pipeline will be in.
- Extends the total service life of pipelines
- Protects against carbonic acid
- Improves flow efficiency
- Reduces operational costs
- Reduces steel consumption
- Protects concrete, steel, and ductile iron
Improved Flow Efficiency Savings
Compressor stations play a crucial role in transporting carbon dioxide through pipelines. Ensuring the interior of these pipes is properly coated is essential for maintaining a smooth surface, which facilitates laminar flow. A smoother pipe enhances flow efficiency, thereby reducing the energy required to operate the compressors. Additionally, improved flow allows for a smaller pipeline diameter, leading to cost savings by optimizing steel usage.
Sherwin-Williams protective coatings for carbon transport:
- Protect against deleterious effects of carbonic acid
- Create a smooth interior for optimized flow
- Reduce pipeline diameter — reduce steel consumption
- Reduce wear on compressor stations
- Reduce energy costs for compressors
Durable and Protective Carbon Capture Coatings & Linings
Determining the proper coating or lining required to keep your pipelines functioning optimally depends on the environment and conditions in which your pipe is installed. Understanding the role that low or high temperatures and moisture play on the coatings and pipes is key.
Sherwin-Williams has various lines of coating and lining solutions to protect pipelines:
High Operating Temperatures
Our High Operating Temperatures (HOT) series are designed for use on pipelines that will be exposed to extremely high temperatures, typically found in offshore operations or other demanding environments where the pipeline carries hot fluids or gases; this coating is usually a type of fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) with enhanced heat resistance properties.
Low Application Temperatures
Our Low Application Temperatures (LAT) series are coatings designed to be applied at a lower temperature than standard coatings, which can be beneficial for faster application and reduced energy consumption during the pipeline coating process.
Moisture-Resistant Overcoat
Our Moisture-Resistant Overcoat (MRO) coating systems provide strong moisture resistance, strong damage tolerance and high flexibility. These systems combine the barrier attributes of historic high operating temperature (HOT) systems with advanced abrasion resistant overcoat (ARO) technology.
The two systems below are highly effective and widely used, but it is best to contact us to learn which systems are ideal for your application's requirements.
