Whitewater, an Austin, Texas based midstream company specializing in large infrastructure projects, wanted to find a better way to protect fusion bonded epoxy pipeline coatings from becoming damaged. Traditionally during backfilling pipe is often wrapped in a polymeric protective wrap. This wrap adds cost, additional labor, extra inspection, and slows down installation. Whitewater partnered with Sherwin-Williams and Stupp Coatings, a Pipeline coatings applicator in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to find a better approach to eliminating polymeric protective wraps and use more native backfill to ultimately drive down project costs. This partnership led Pipeclad 2060 moisture resistant overcoat to be applied to 120 miles of spiral welp pipe on the Whistler Pipeline in Texas. Before beginning the project, Stupp Coatings conducted extensive damage testing, including impact and cold flexibility testing to ensure the coating would meet damage resistance requirements. Pipeclad 2060 was applied at the same time as the FBE layer adding no additional time to the project. After coating Stupp Coatings observed a dramatic reduction in post application holidays, particularly around weld seams on the spiral welded pipe. After installation was completed, direct current voltage gradient inspections demonstrated that Pipeclad 2060 performed at the same level as pipes using polymeric protective wraps.
