Johnny [00:00:06] Hi, it's Johnny Pourciau again with Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine coatings. Today, we're back in the MRO space, and our subject matter is Passive Fire Protection.
(GFX: Today's Topic: Passive Fire Protection)
(GFX: Special guest: Russel Norris - Fire Protection Development Manager - Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine)
Our guest today is Russell Norris, who is a subject matter expert at Sherwin-Williams. And he's going to provide a little insight into what he's doing today, working with owners and teams collectively to help in this space. Russell?

Russel [00:00:29] In 2021, I look forward to engaging with the P&M team in pursuing fireproofing projects within chemical plants and refineries. FIRETEX M90/03 offers the contractor benefits that are critical in order for performing work inside of an operating facility. I'm prepared to join forces both virtually and in person in winning these projects.
Johnny [00:00:50] Russell, as we have worked together in this space for several years now, can you explain how passive fire protection epoxy intumescents play a role in the MRO space for downstream facilities?
(GFX: Fire protection protects a facility's assets and people, as well as the environment)
Russel [00:01:04] Fireproofing serves a critical role in mitigating fire risk within refineries and chemical plants. These facilities must protect their assets in order to minimize downtime following a fire, provide safety for their personnel and to prevent harmful impacts to the environment FIRETEX is designed to provide corrosion and fire protection for the design life of the asset with minimal to no maintenance.
(GFX: FIRETEX® M90/03 provides both fire and corrosion protection)
Johnny [00:01:27] With the next generation product of FIRETEX M90/03 now in play in our markets, what would you say stands out from a product perspective over other products in this space?
(GFX: FIRETEX® M90/03 can be applied by single component or plural pumps, or by trowel)
Russel [00:01:43] FIRETEX M90/03 offers the contractor various methods of application. It can be hand troweled on, single leg ram-feed pump or plural component pump. Within the MRO market space, being flexible with methods of application is critical. Also, we have a much lower film thickness requirement, according to UL 1709.
(GFX: For one-hour ratings no mesh is required, for 90 minutes and above mesh is only required in the flange tips)
For one hour ratings no mesh is required. For ratings 90 minutes and above you only have to have mesh in the flange tips only. Also, this product finishes out very nicely. Products in the market today, you have to wait 15, 20 minutes depending on ambient conditions before you can finish roll it and make it look like paint. With FIRETEX M90/03, depending on the ambient conditions, you can get on top of it almost immediately and with a dry roller to get that paint like finish. But this product has tremendous film build properties, sag resistance, and also with the combined application properties and low thickness requirements, it lowers the total installed cost. These are all necessary in order to be competitive within the MRO market space.
Johnny [00:02:51] As we have been focused on partnering relationships with local facilities, how can the Sherwin-Williams team assist the local asset integrity leaders, maintenance managers and supervisors at these facilities?
Russel [00:03:05] When it comes to fireproofing within refineries and chemical plants, often the plant personnel that are assigned these tasks have little to no knowledge of passive fire protection. They may only know the code being UL 1709 for the fire rating, but using the tools and resources being made available to the P&M team, they can initiate important discussions in order to bring in the FIRETEX specialists such as myself or a FIRETEX technical service representative. And then we can sit down and we can address their challenges and help them with their projects.

Johnny [00:03:37] Basically, one of our technical reps can walk down the areas and gather data to engineer a PFP system that meets the needs of this specific project for the local integrity and maintenance leaders. So with today's conversation, I would like to say, when you think of passive fire protection needs at your facility, you will think of Sherwin-Williams and contact our local Sherwin-Williams representatives to work with you and your team. With that be stated, I would like to say thank you to Russell for joining us today. I would also like to thank you for listening in. Again, stay safe. And we look forward to visiting with you again soon. Thanks.
