Installing Hygienic, Heavy-Duty Flooring for a Food Factory Production Area
Seamless Polyurethane Screed Flooring for Demanding Food Manufacturing Environments.
The Challenge: Creating a Durable, Hygienic Floor for a High-Use Food Factory
Gate Gourmet—the world’s largest independent provider of catering and provisioning services for airlines and rail networks—was establishing a new catering unit and required a flooring solution suited to a highly demanding food production environment.
The facility covered approximately 3,000 square metres and featured a hard concrete subfloor. The flooring system needed to be extremely durable, long-lasting and seamless to support strict hygiene standards. In addition, it had to withstand heavy daily use, frequent cleaning and exposure to food production processes.
As a food site, the floor also had to resist thermal shock, chemical attack and abrasion while maintaining a safe, anti-slip surface for staff working in wet and busy conditions.
The Solution: Installing Polyurethane Resin Screed to Meet Demanding Floor Requirements
Arambol Architects and Surveyors specified Sherwin-Williams’ FasTop™ TG69 polyurethane resin screed to meet the demanding requirements of the new Gate Gourmet facility.
FasTop TG69 is a water-based polyurethane screed designed for heavy-duty industrial environments where durability, hygiene and performance are critical. The system offers excellent resistance to thermal shock, abrasion and chemical attack. It is stable under steam cleaning and resistant to boiling water and process liquids up to 100°C, making it ideal for food production areas with intensive washdown regimes.
The finished surface provides a matt, textured, anti-slip finish while remaining fully seamless, helping to maintain high hygiene standards and reduce the risk of contamination.
Before installation, the concrete subfloor required thorough preparation. The surface was vacuum-assisted shot blasted to remove contaminants and create a strong mechanical key for the resin screed. FasTop TG69 was then carefully tapered and toed in along the steel-reinforced concrete joints. This ensured a seamless finish with as few joints as possible, improving both hygiene and long-term durability.
The Results: A Seamless, Long-Lasting Flooring System for Food Production
The completed FasTop TG69 installation delivered a hard-wearing, seamless and hygienic floor across the entire 3,000 square metre production area. The system provides the strength and durability required for busy food factory operations while supporting rigorous cleaning routines essential for maintaining food safety standards.
Its resistance to thermal shock, chemicals and abrasion ensures long-term performance in a demanding manufacturing environment. The textured, anti-slip finish improves safety for staff working in wet conditions, while the seamless design helps prevent dirt traps and supports effective hygiene control.
Gate Gourmet now benefits from a robust, food-safe flooring solution that meets the operational, safety and hygiene requirements of modern food production facilities, delivering reliable performance for years to come.
