The Sherwin-Williams High Performance Flooring decking and balcony systems are installed in various surface finishes and textures depending on intended use, ease of cleaning, and slip resistance and waterproofing requirements.
The profile required to provide slip resistance in wet conditions prohibits the use of mops or pads to clean the textured surface. These surfaces require the use of a bristled brush or a bristle attachment on a power scrubber in conjunction with a mild detergent such as an all-purpose cleaner. Power spraying is also an effective method. A cleaner/degreaser can be used along with these methods to facilitate cleaning.
Hot coals from charcoal grills can cause permanent discoloration or burns in the deck coating sealer. Care should be taken to prevent hot coals or charcoal from dropping on the deck. Lighter fluid, oil, gasoline or other solvents should be wiped up if spilled. Routine cleaning to remove oil stains using a cleaner/degreaser is recommended for longer life of the waterproofing system as well as maintaining the desired slip resistance.
Because of the innate softness required of the membrane to provide the flexibility needed for crack bridging and waterproofing, the decking may be gouged or cut by sharp objects. Care must therefore be taken when removing snow and ice. Plastic snow shovels are recommended over metal shovels or scrappers. Snowplows should not be used. Chemical deicing agents, sand or other abrasives may be safely used for snow and ice removal, as the topping will not be affected.
Regular inspections should be performed throughout the life of the deck to determine that no damage has occurred that could cause leaks. In most cases, applying the same seal coat that was originally used will repair the deck if damage has occurred to the seal coat. Severe damage should be repaired as needed. Contact technical service for specific recommendations.
The decking system can be aesthetically rejuvenated by periodically applying another seal coat of the same material as originally used or with another product if a change is desired. Again, contact technical service for specific recommendations.
With these simple precautions and maintenance procedures, your Sherwin-Williams waterproofing decking systems should provide you with many years of durable service.
