Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes contributing partner for “Project Prestone” restoration build

(CLEVELAND, OHIO) January 10, 2018 – For nearly a decade, Sherwin-Williams and Barrett-Jackson have worked together to create products that embody the spirit and style of the vehicles crossing the famous auction block. In 2017, Sherwin-Williams teamed up with Barrett-Jackson and Prestone, the leader in under-the-hood chemicals, on a one-of-a-kind restoration build named “Project Prestone.”

The project car, a 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe, was auctioned off in January at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, and sold for a whopping $100,000. All proceeds  benefitted the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an Arizona-based, nonprofit medical research institute dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life-changing results. “Cancer is a terrible disease and we are proud to do what we can to help advance cancer research,” said Nick Dowling, Product Manager, Automotive Finishes Division at Sherwin-Williams.

The project car got a complete makeover including upgrading the stock suspension, brakes and exhaust, a reconstructed transmission, new sound system, graphics package and exterior paint job. Sherwin-Williams Western Training Manager, Clint Baker, out of the Reno Training Center, was on site to oversee the exterior paint application, which included the following Sherwin-Williams refinishing products:

• P30 - SpectraPrime® Color Primer Surfacer: a premium quality 2K-urethane primer-surfacer that utilizes state-of-the-art Ure-Flex™ Technology to provide the ultimate in performance, versatility, and productivity.
  
• Ultra 7000® Refinish System: a productive, efficient, and consistent paint system. With repeatable performance, efficient processes, and products that can assist in decreasing cycle times, it is the most productive refinish system in the market.
• CC200 Dynamic Clearcoat: a new category amongst premium clearcoats, offering superior appearance in half the time of a typical glamour clearcoat.  Delivering consistent premium appearance without sacrificing productivity this clear is designed for any painter, application, and repair environment.

“This car originally produced in 1987 would have had a single stage paint job on it. By using the right mix of products, we are able to help expedite the application time and keep this build on schedule,” explains Clint Baker. “The shop crew at Barrett-Jackson Restoration are first-rate and were an absolute pleasure to work with.”

The vehicle has been generously donated back to Barrett-Jackson by the buyer and will be sold again in the future to benefit TGen.
