Building Science Part I: “Innovation Begins on a Test Fence"

Duration - 4:42

Learn exactly what goes into testing Sherwin-Williams (formerly Valspar) extraordinary architectural metal coating and colors before they go to market.

In Part I of the Sherwin-Williams Building Science series, “Innovation Begins on a Test Fence,” we take a closer look at the science and technology behind testing for coil and extrusion coatings. We visit the Sherwin-Williams Fort Myers, Fla., "Test Fence" facility where we see how more than 100,000 paint samples for architectural and metal building product coatings are exposed to the elements and studied.

This Sherwin-Williams testing facility provides insight behind the creation and performance of exterior coatings that include pigments, resins and polymers that go into Sherwin-Williams Fluropon 70% PVDF, WeatherXL SMP, Valflon FEVE and Polyester metal paint lines. Ultimately, with so much metal coatings exposure data at their fingertips, this time-proven testing process cuts down on the Sherwin-Williams cycle time for new product development.
