FIRETEX Solutions for Cryogenic Spill Protection

Cryogenic refers to chemicals and materials stored at very low temperatures. In the hydrocarbon sector, these are most likely to be found in LNG facilities and transport vessels, which present a number of challenges for protective coatings.

Steel becomes brittle when exposed to cryogenic temperatures, so coatings must be able to withstand exposure to these conditions and ensure that the steel substrate remains insulated in the event of a spillage of cryogenic material.

Fully compatible with our FIRETEX M90 series products, FIRETEX M89/02 provides cryogenic temperature insulation and up to 2 hours of cryogenic spill protection under ISO20088-1.

ISO20088 standard for Cryogenic Spill Protection

The ISO20088 standard defines three distinct testing areas for cryogenic spillage protective systems:

1 – Liquid Phase, which asseses how the protective coating responds to the spillage and pooling of liquid cryogenic materials.

2 – Vapour Exposure, which examines how effectively the coating responds to vapours emitted from a cryogenic liquid spillage.

3 – Jet Release, which determines the resistance of a coating in conditions where cryogenic material is discharged at high pressure.

Additionally, LNG is highly flammable and carries an extreme risk of ignition in the event of an accident. Therefore, protective coatings used on LNG assets must also provide effective passive fire protection in the event that a cryogenic spillage event rapidly presents a jet fire or blast scenario.
