Tank Linings Coating Solutions

Tank Linings keep your facility's tanks protected from the threat of corrosion from the material in storage while ensuring the purity of the stored product. Continue reading the information below to discover the important considerations in selecting a tank lining and learn how correctly specified and maintained linings can keep your operations running safely for years to come.

Let our experts help you find the right tank lining

Why are Tank Linings needed?

Tank Linings are primarily needed for two reasons:

1. Protect the steel from corrosion

Stored materials such as crude oil, acids and sea water can be highly corrosive, resulting in a loss of steel thickness and the tank structure being compromised. Damaged tanks can potentially lead to leaks and environmental damage with potentially serious financial and legal repercussions.

2. Maintain the purity of stored material

For some stored materials, including food, drinking water and aviation fuel, ensuring the product remains free from contaminants is of crucial importance. As a result, many of these sectors are subject to rigorous standards and safety limits for maintaining purity.

How long can a Tank Lining last?

The expected lifetime of a tank lining depends on the intended service. For example, fuel storage tanks have achieved greater than 30 years’ life expectancy with a correctly selected and applied lining. Higher temperatures and more aggressive chemicals can expect a reduced expected lifetime, potentially less than 10 years in extreme circumstances.

When choosing a tank lining, it’s vital that you contact our experts to receive advice and guidance on product selection and long-term maintenance for the very best performance.

Rapid Tank Lining Inspection with Opti-Check

Opti-Check™ is a technology used in many Sherwin-Williams Epoxy and Epoxy Novolac linings. Optically activated fluorescent pigments are added to the lining, revealing holidays and pinholes to the naked eye when inspected with a UV torch. This can be used during application for a rapid inspection process and reduced touch-ups and to inspect tanks for damage after they been in service.

Tank Linings for the Biofuels Industry

The biofuels market has complex tank linings requirements. The feedstocks and storage temperatures used in the biofuels market create extremely aggressive conditions that quickly degrade the performance of the traditional linings used in the petroleum industries. The tank linings selection process for the renewables sector requires expert discussions with our experienced tank linings experts to determine the most suitable solution.

Sherwin-Williams has conducted extensive testing on a wide selection of feedstocks and temperature ranges to understand the performance of our linings in the context of biofuels service. Our research is ongoing as we continue to expand our product offering in this area.
