GFX: Ask Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes
Introducing the new high build polyester primer HDR 22 from Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes. HDR 22 high build polyester primer is an ideal solution for hail damage and small dent repair. To begin, first scuff the surface of the area being repaired using a grey scuff pad and the appropriate Sherwin-Williams surface cleaner. Pay close attention to small grooves and depressions. Once done then wipe dry the entire area of being repaired with a clean cloth. Sand the entire area that is being repaired with P 180 grit sandpaper and using a D8. Apply body filler or small dent repair material to hail damaged dimples that are larger than a nickel or diamond diameter. Once the body filler has fully dried. Block sand the repair area with P 180 grit sandpaper until the surface is flat. If the dents smaller than a nickel and do not require a body filler skip this step and proceed to the next step. Thoroughly clean the entire repair area with an appropriate Sherwin-Williams surface cleaner. Then wipe dry with a clean cloth. Apply two to three medium coats of Sherwin-Williams HDR 22 high build polyester primer with a 2.0 to 2.2 fluid tip. Allow HDR 22 to flash for five to 10 minutes in between coats. After Sherwin-Williams high build polyester HDR 22 has cured, block sand with P 180 grit sandpaper followed by P 400 grit sandpaper.
Note the panel must be completely sanded with P 400 grit before sealing to ensure that sand scratches do not travel through the final finish. Apply one full even wet coat of spectra seal color primer sealer. Allow to flash and slick before topcoating. Apply either the Sherwin-Williams Ultra 7000 or AWX Performance Plus premium automotive refinish basecoats. Use any of the Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes premium clearcoats that is approved for use over the base coat you were using, such as our HPC 15, CC 930 or 1100755.
Complete mixing in applications recommendations of each colorcoat can be found on the product datasheet.
