[MUSIC PLAYING] SHERWIN-WILLIAMS
[NARRATOR] In this application technique video, we're going to cover blend area refinishing using the Ultra 9K Premium Waterborne Basecoat system. First, all bodywork must be finished with P180 grit sand paper. Feather edge the repair with P220 grit DA paper, followed by P320 grit DA paper. Extend the sanded area around the repair with P400 paper to accommodate the application of primer. Then, clean the repair area with an appropriate surface cleaner from the Sherwin-Williams product line. Sand the blend area with P800 grit, scuff the unsanded areas around the repair area, using a gray scuff pad. Then re-clean it if necessary. Treat any large areas of bare metal with Ultra Systems PE995 Premium Corrosion Shield, LCF Etching Primer or E2G970 Corrosion Shield LCF Wash Primer. Apply two to three coats of Ultra System P27 or P30 SpectraPrime Primer Surfacer. Allow to flash for five to ten minutes between coats. Make sure you do not apply Primer Surfacer beyond the sand scratches. Follow the drying schedule outlined on the product data sheet. Apply a dry guide coat before block sanding with P400 grit sandpaper, then reapply the guide coat to the repaired area. Finish sand using P600 grit paper and properly clean the area. Then spray one full, even wet coat of basecoat blender slightly beyond the expected blend area. When possible, avoid application to the end of the panel. Then, dehydrate the blender until hand slick. The next step is the Ultra 9K basecoat. Remember, wet-on-wet is the preferred application method for most colors, with Ultra 9K. The first coat is a full wet coverage coat. Immediately back the spray gun up two inches compared to the first coat, and apply a second coat. This is referred to as a medium wet orientation coat. After the coverage and orientation coats are applied, dehydrate until hand slick. For effect colors, apply a drop coat at double the distance, with half the pressure to achieve a uniform look. Allow Ultra 9K basecoat color to fully dehydrate. Now you're ready for a Premium Ultra System Clearcoat. Thanks for watching our Ultra 9K application video and be sure to tune in to the Sherwin-Williams social media channels for more tech tips. SHERWIN-WILLIAMS
