[MUSIC PLAYING] SHERWIN-WILLIAMS
[NARRATOR] Thanks for joining us today as we walk through the application of a 3 stage white pearl using Sherwin-Williams Ultra 9K Premium Waterborne basecoat system. Let's start with the color check. Determine the correct color early in the repair process, preferably when the estimation is completed. Preparing a step down panel is necessary to determine the number of midcoat layers required to achieve the correct color match. The same spray gun should be used for the step down panel and the final repair. Attach three metal spray out cards to a stick. Over all three panels, apply one wet coat of sealer, then apply the groundcoat and let it flash off. Then apply a midcoat to all of the cards. Remove one of the cards and apply another coat of midcoat. Remove the second card. and apply a third coat of midcoat. Each card should be numbered with the amount of midcoat. Finally, apply the ultra system clear coat over three quarters of each card. This allows you to see the color with and without clearcoat. This process will allow you to determine the proper amount of midcoat needed for the repair. Let's move on to surface prep. We recommend preparing the panel using P800 grit sand paper on a DA sander. Then, clean the panel using an appropriate Sherwin-Williams surface cleaner. For the undercoat, we are using Ultra System P27 SpectraPrime Primer Surfacer/Sealer with S47 2K primer/sealer converter, ES15 reducer and H45 SpectraPrime 2K primer/sealer hardener. P27 is a premium quality 2K urethane that delivers best-in-class gloss holdout, resistance to film shrinkage and easy sanding. For this specific video, we've selected gray instead of white. Now for the ground coat. As needed, apply a tack coat before the application of any coverage coats. The tack coat serves as a grip coat for the wet-on-wet application and gives the double coat something to lay into. The tack coat also helps you achieve faster coverage. Dehydrate after the tack coat. The first full coat is a coverage coat. Wet-on-wet application requires no dehydration between coats. So now for the second orientation coat. Before spraying the midcoat, allow the orientation coat to dehydrate. For the midcoat, the required number of coats was determined during the color check. Refer to your step down panel and apply the required number of medium coats, using the wet-on-wet application method. Allow the ultra 9K basecoat to fully dehydrate before moving on to the clearcoat. We've selected Ultra System CC200 dynamic clearcoat in this application video. This is our number one selling clearcoat. CC200 is recognized not only for its gloss level, but holdout in DOI. With CC200, we used US4 reducer and UH80 hardener. Thanks for watching our Ultra 9K application video and be sure to tune in to the Sherwin-Williams social media channels for more tech tips. [GFX] A man dresses in Sherwin-Williams branded protective gear.
He pours varying amounts of paint and gloss into measuring cups, mixing them.
Three sprayout cards are attached to a metal stick. They are white with a thin black line down the middle.
The man sprays them with the mixtures, covering up the line.
He angles them so that the light reflects off them.
In a spray booth, he prepares a car part for work.
He sands it down, and wipes it.
The undercoat is measured on a digital scale. He sprays it on.
The groundcoat is measured out and sprayed on.
The man sprays the car part with several layers of product.
The part is now a pearlescent white.

In memoriam - Marc Holbury. November 28, 1963 to April 6, 2021. Marc Holbury unexpectedly passed away as we were producing this video. To say we are devastated by his passing is an understatement. We're heartbroken. Marc was a beloved member of the Sherwin-Williams family. He leaves behind a legacy in the automotive finishes division of the Sherwin-Williams company where he devoted his time training our teams and our customers in the proper application of our coatings. He was an exceptional teacher. He was an exceptional co-worker. He was an exceptional friend. Marc will forever live on in our hearts, in our minds and in our booths and the booths of our customers. Gone, but never forgotten.
