Highline Public Schools in Tukwila, Washington took advantage of its close proximity to the aviation industry in the area and pushed for a new high school that would focus on a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) oriented education. Bassetti Architects designed the 72,000 SF structure for Raisbeck Aviation High School, which accommodates 400 students. The new high school is located near the Museum of Flight, which helped to serve as inspiration for the design of the building. The sleek look of the school was intended to evoke the lines found in aerodynamic design and reflects the shape of an airplane wing.

The school’s exterior metal wall panels on the front side move up and over the structure, turning into the roof in one continuous motion. Bemo USA supplied aluminum curved panels to create the shape of the building and provide the necessary weather performance characteristics. Producing panels with long straight legs that then transition into a tight smooth curve is one of the specialized applications that Bemo equipment and operators are able to produce. The metal panels are coated with Sherwin-Williams Fluropon® Classic II – in the color Cool Zactique – which completes the look and feel of the building.
