CLEVELAND (February 22, 2023) – Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine was awarded two 2022 Prestige Awards from the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings (JPCL), bringing home accolades for the program’s Top Steel Coatings Project and Top Specialty Coatings Project.

The annual JPCL Prestige Awards program recognizes the most noteworthy and significant recently-completed projects – and the key professionals, known as Project MVPs, who made them possible – in the protective and marine coatings industry.

Differing from past editions of JCPL-awarded distinctions, the 2022 Top Project Awards focused on industrial painting projects and highlighted specific products across an array of industry sectors, including water and wastewater, marine, bridge and highway, energy production, and others.

“As a leading player in the coatings industry, we are extremely proud to have been recognized in this year’s JPCL Prestige Awards with two projects that highlight our dedication to professional excellence, production of top-quality coatings and commitment to seeing projects through to successful outcomes,” said Bryan Draga, Global Vice President of Marketing, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine. “These honors reflect the exceptional effort and unwavering commitment of our team, who are the driving force behind our success. We are grateful for this recognition from a leading industry publication – and will continue our commitment to consistently deliver exceptional products and performance that exceed expectations.”

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine earned the following 2022 JPCL Prestige Awards:

Top Project – Steel Coatings: Whistler Pipeline

A fast-curing dual coating system was used for the Whistler Pipeline project in Texas, resulting in high shop throughput, lower costs and optimal pipe durability without using polymeric protective wraps. More than 18,000 pipes were sent through applicator Stupp Coatings’ shop in Louisiana for the construction of a significant portion of the 450-mile pipeline, which spans more than half the width of Texas. The pipes had to be fully prepared, coated and shipped within 48 weeks to ensure timely completion of each pipeline construction stage.

With technical assistance from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine, the applicator employed an inventive dual coating system that applied two coatings in quick succession – Pipeclad® 2000, a thermosetting epoxy coating, and Pipeclad® 2060 MRO, an abrasion-resistant overcoat (ARO) that provided an extremely robust protective coating on the exterior of pipes to withstand the force of falling rocks and debris during backfilling.

Project MVPs included Rick Jones, Vice President, Stupp Coatings and the following Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine team members:

  • Jim Lacey, Strategic Accounts Manager – Functional Coatings
  • Kandyce Kohlmaier, Project Development Manager
  • Brandon Blair, Sales Manager – Functional Coatings
  • Dr. Jeffrey Rogozinski, Global Product Director – Fusion-Bonded Epoxy/Pipe

Award nominees consisted of coatings projects on steel structures that may have included the application of new coatings technologies and unique or complicated aspects or challenges.

Top Project – Specialty Function: 303 Battery High-Rise Apartment Complex Project

Offsite coating applications enabled the efficient construction of 303 Battery in downtown Seattle, which was erected in minimal space and employed extensive use of architecturally exposed steel. Steel members received intumescent coatings at nearby application shop Puget Sound Coatings. Lower required thicknesses of fire protective coatings made for faster application and curing times and significantly lower costs – while also helping to showcase the attractiveness of the exposed steel. An aesthetic topcoat was added to members before being shipped to the construction site close to the time needed for assembly. These efficiencies, along with the use of utility-packed prefabricated panels offsite, accelerated construction and further promoted the sustainability of the building, which was designed to create more energy than it consumes.

Applicators used an array of products from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine, including: Recoatable Epoxy Primer, a two-component, high-build, rust-inhibitive epoxy coating designed for fast drying; Firetex® FX9502, a durable, corrosion-resistant intumescent coating with a semi-gloss finish that provides fire protection to both interior and exterior architectural exposed steel members; and Sher-Loxane® 800, a versatile, high-performance epoxy-silicone hybrid that provides long-term corrosion protection.

Project MVPs included Marcus Miller, Construction Manager, Sustainable Living Innovations; Robert Trejo, Production Supervisor, and Gabe Rosgen, Shipping and Receiving Manager – both from Puget Sound Coatings; and the following individuals from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine:

  • Russell Norris, Business Development Manager – Fire Protection
  • Samuel Schuetz, Technical Service Representative

The award recognized coating projects that involved applications serving functions beyond corrosion protection – considering superior achievements in fire protection, graffiti remediation or antifouling involving steel, concrete or a combination of substrates.
