Sherwin-Williams Linings Exceed EI Standard 1541 Requirements for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

CLEVELAND (July 31, 2024) – Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine continues to meet evolving aviation fuel standards with two robust protective linings that have been proven to exceed the stringent requirements of the EI Standard 1541 for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Both Dura-Plate® UHS and Nova-Plate® 360 lining products have now passed testing requirements for the internationally recognized standard for aviation fuel handling systems. These new certifications for SAF complement the two products’ long-standing compliance with standard aviation fuel.

As the aviation industry continues its push for using more renewable fuel sources, SAF blends are becoming the norm. These alternative fuels are made from non-petroleum feedstocks to help reduce emissions associated with air transportation. Their makeup does not alter the stringent quality requirements for aviation fuels, but it necessitates new testing to confirm linings conform with EI Standard 1541 for SAF.

In response, Sherwin-Williams has rigorously tested Dura-Plate UHS and Nova-Plate 360 for resistance and purity (gum tests) and other fuel changes (corrosivity and thermal stability). In all tests performed by an independent laboratory, the linings exceeded EI Standard 1541 for SAF requirements, achieving full compliance and confirming the continued suitability of these proven linings in a changing market.

“Our extensive testing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel reaffirms the futureproof resilience and adaptability of our linings for use in storage tanks, rail tank cars, piping systems and other aviation fuel handling assets,” said Michael Harrison, Global Product Director, Linings, for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine. “As the aviation industry moves toward more sustainable practices, it’s crucial that our products not only comply with current standards but also exceed them to ensure long-term performance and reliability. The positive testing results highlight our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers and the industry, including their sustainability goals.”

The two products exceeding the stringent demands of EI Standard 1541 for SAF include:

  • Dura-Plate UHS is a two-component, ultra-high-solids epoxy amine engineered specifically for immersion service in ballast tanks, oil tanks and refined fuel storage tanks. This advanced epoxy provides superior protection through its high-build, edge-retentive properties compared to conventional epoxies.
  • Nova-Plate 360 is a two-component, PTFE, inert, flake-reinforced novolac tank lining. It can be applied using single-leg airless or plural-component airless application methods, with return-to-service times in as little as 24 hours. Nova-Plate 360 boasts excellent abrasion resistance and incorporates Optical Activated Pigment (OAP) technology to enhance the accuracy and productivity of holiday detection.
