Versatile Tank Linings Meet Diverse Needs

Lab test and field studies identify coatings that streamline tank cleanings, adhere under pressure and withstand aggressive chemicals

In this article, Travis Crotwell, Business Development Manager, and John Hilton, Energy Business Development Manager explore why three different oil and gas producers asked for help in identifying the best lining systems for their specific operational challenges. Each company worked with Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine to test multiple solutions.

The results helped one company identify a solution that enables easier tank cleanings, another producer ensure that its chosen linings would adhere to pressure vessel walls and a third company specify a lining that will withstand aggressive, long-term corrosive attacks from drilling chemicals. These versatile lining solutions - Nova-Plate 360 and Magnalux 2200GF - are now helping the three oil and gas producers realise efficiencies, reduce costs, extend asset lives and enhance overall safety.

Side-by-side field test of different linings applied to two process vessels, the Nova-Plate 360 lining (left) stayed completely intact on the vessel's hatch covers, which are subject to the most operational wear and tear, and throughout the vessel. The polycyclamine-cured lining (right) blistered, cracked and peeled on the covers and elsewhere inside the vessel.
