johnny [00:00:06] Hi, is Johnny Pourciau again with Sherwin-Williams protective and marine coatings, I'd like to say thank you for joining us.
GFX: Todays Topic: Secondary containment in downstream facilities special guest: Rodney Cressionnie Oil & Gas Business Development Manager Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine
Today's subject matter is secondary containment, in downstream facilities. Our guest today is Rodney Cressionnie. Rodney comes to us with 14 years of experience in paint and coatings in the last seven years, focused in the oil and gas segment. Rodney, when someone walks in these downstream facilities, they normally look straight ahead and they see the process unity, they see utility piping, they see tanks and vessels. However, on several occasions you've told me that you look somewhere those if you could explain where do you look when you walk into these downstream facilities?
GFX: Rodney Cressionnie Oil & Gas Business Development Manager Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine
rodney [00:00:47] Yes, I do. And that area that I tend to pay close attention to is the concrete that lies under and around all those prominent assets that you mentioned.

GFX: The concrete areas provide additional protection and are essential assets
Many downstream facilities have an abundance of concrete that serves as additional protection to the processes. These containments pads, trenches and sumps are often forgotten about as essential parts of the facility's assets.
johnny [00:01:06] So, Rodney, what intrigues you or pulls you into focusing on the secondary containment areas of these downstream facilities?
rodney [00:01:16] These containments and pads are often the last line of defense when the facility operators are trying to protect their assets and the environment from potential leaks and spills. Some of the commodities that are being used throughout these facilities are very aggressive chemicals that can severely damage the concrete and penetrate the soil, leading to lengthy shutdowns and costly fines.

GFX: The concrete areas need additional protection to prevent damage
Consequently, they need additional layers of protection to prevent damage from occurring during operation.
GFX: Resinous systems often work well for these uses
While there are a few ways to add protection to these areas, a resinous system provides numerous advantages to the owners and operators.
johnny [00:01:47] What coating systems are coating system should be utilized for these downstream secondary containment areas, which can be aggressive by nature?
GFX: Specific site-related concerns are considered when selecting a coating system
rodney [00:01:57] We take the owner's specific circumstances into consideration while we help design a system for their various areas. Things like chemical resistance, anticipated exposure rate and desired service life are carefully balanced to create a coating system that works best for the owner and operator. We look at the intended use of the area to ascertain how the system will be built around existing structures and transitions. We also look at things like work schedules and project budgets to round out a recommendation tailor to our owners' unique expectations.
GFX: Building chemically-resistant concrete systems can be an involved process
Building chemical resistant concrete systems can be one of the more involved coatings projects in a facility. So we take pride in helping put these recommendations together with the owners and applicators in mind.
johnny [00:02:36] So basically, you walk down the containment areas, you gather data and you engineer a coating system or containment system specifically for this designated area to protect.
rodney [00:02:48] That's correct, Johnny. Chemical resistant containment such as these always differ to some degree.

GFX: A site survey is important for assessing the concrete coating system needed
So spending the time to survey the area is crucial to the overall effectiveness of the project. We consider the service a standard part of our interactions with facilities in the downstream market. And one of my favorite parts of the job is the opportunity to be a member of the team building solutions that help these facilities run as safely and as efficiently as possible.
johnny [00:03:12] So, Rodney, thank you for joining us today. We appreciate your time. We appreciate your expertise on this subject matter. We'd also like to say thank you to our audience for joining us. We appreciate your time. We know it's a busy time of the year, so we are appreciative. As always, please stay safe if you have any coatings or secondary containment questions, please reach out to your local Sherwin-Williams representative. We'd be happy to help you. Thank you again. Stay safe.
