Comfort, Sound-Reducing Resin Flooring for Modern Psychiatric Hospital Facilities

The Challenge: Installing Durable, Quiet and Patient-Friendly Flooring Across a Large Psychiatric Hospital

When Region Zealand undertook construction of Copenhagen’s new psychiatric hospital—Denmark’s most modern facility of its kind—the project required a flooring system capable of meeting complex healthcare demands. The hospital spans approximately 44,000m², with flooring required across patient rooms, communal living areas, kitchens, canteens and extensive circulation zones.

Hospitals experience constant pedestrian movement, and psychiatric healthcare environments require additional focus on comfort, safety and acoustic performance. The flooring needed to support large volumes of daily foot traffic while helping to reduce noise levels, which can significantly influence patient wellbeing and staff working conditions.

Approximately 30,000m² of flooring required installation, including more than 5,000m² of walkways. Prior to installation of the resin flooring system, the initial task involved preparing concrete and mortar substrates to ensure floors were level, aligned and suitable for a high-performance seamless finish.

The Solution: Seamless Polyurethane Comfort Flooring Engineered for Healthcare Environments

Two SofTop polyurethane flooring systems were specified and installed to meet the hospital’s operational and patient care requirements: SofTop SLR and SofTop Comfort SL. Both systems are hard-wearing, self-smoothing polyurethane flooring solutions that can be installed efficiently while achieving a consistently high-quality finish.

SofTop Comfort SL incorporates an initial flexible membrane beneath the self-smoothing polyurethane topping. This additional layer creates a cushioned finish that provides enhanced underfoot comfort, supporting staff and patient mobility throughout the facility. The flexible membrane also contributes to sound absorption, helping reduce noise levels across busy healthcare environments where constant movement is unavoidable.

The polyurethane systems provide a seamless finish that helps maintain hygiene standards by eliminating joints and gaps that could harbour dirt or bacteria. The environmentally friendly composition of the flooring further supported the project’s sustainability objectives while delivering exceptional durability across high-use areas.

The systems were installed throughout patient rooms, living spaces, circulation corridors, kitchens and canteens, ensuring a consistent, safe and visually cohesive flooring solution across the hospital’s interior environment.

The completed SofTop flooring installation delivered a long-term flooring solution capable of withstanding heavy daily foot traffic while enhancing patient comfort and safety. The cushioned polyurethane system improved walking comfort for both patients and staff, while its noise-reducing properties helped create a calmer, more supportive healthcare environment.

The seamless flooring construction improved hygiene performance and simplified maintenance routines across the facility. The environmentally responsible polyurethane system also supported the hospital’s sustainability goals while providing exceptional durability throughout high-traffic areas.
