Emerging Styles in the Wood Finishing Industry

Sherwin-Williams presents its 2024 Industrial Wood ColorMix as a complement to residential trends released in August, syncing the wood finishes to wall paint to create a complete color offering. The four new palettes — Nature Inspired, Energetic Creativity, Serene Harmony and Dramatic Moods — will influence product development and emerging styles within the wood finishing industry for years ahead.

“Our new collection is simply stunning and provides the perfect balance to other residential trends,” said Maggie O’Hare, Sherwin-Williams Senior Manager of Color and Design. “Our customers in the Industrial Wood market want to know that what they are selling will complement other design choices in their customer’s homes, so we simplified the situation by factoring that in from the get-go.”

Experts at the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse in Greensboro, North Carolina, are focused on providing state-of-the art wood finishes. They study trends and the influences behind them and then translate that information into the ColorMix forecast for both pigments and stains.

“A finish can make or break a product — whether that be cabinets, furniture or any other wood item — so by looking at trends, we have a better understanding of what’s ahead for the industry and we can add value for our customers,” said Sherwin-Williams Color, Material and Finishes expert Eric Crosby. “We understand our customers’ businesses and that they have a lead time they need to plan for; by letting them know the upcoming trends, they can design and manufacture products that will hit the market at the right time.”

The team at the DesignHouse carefully cultivated the 47 new colors in this year’s ColorMix to pair perfectly with the residential wall trends while aligning with evolving trends in the Industrial Wood market.

“It’s important that we, as a company, consider the end user — in this case, the homeowner,” said Crosby. “The kitchen cabinets, furniture and building products that our customers are manufacturing reside in the home along with the painted walls we cover. We want to make sure that when our products come together, they sing. The finishes in Nature Inspired, Energetic Creativity, Serene Harmony and Dramatic Moods work with the colors presented for walls to create a cohesive aesthetic among end users’ home décor.”
