Hydrocarbon Fire Protective Coatings
Superior protection from fire, blasts, weathering, and mechanical damage
WHAT IS INTUMESCENT Hydrocarbon FIRE PROTECTION?
Hydrocarbon fires often occur at facilities that process crude oil and hydrocarbon products such as oil and gas. These high temperature fires are typically associated with petroleum processing facilities, oil refineries, offshore platforms, chemical processing plants, LNG terminals, etc. Intumescent hydrocarbon fire protective coatings provide thermal protection properties which insulate steel from fire and cryogenic exposure, preserving the integrity of the steel. These coatings effectively mitigate the effects of jet fires, pool fires, boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions (BLEVEs), and blasts - with fire protection for the specified hourly rate.
Onshore Fire Protection
Converting crude oil and natural gas into petroleum-based products presents risks of fire and explosion. Onshore facilities such as refineries and chemical plants have specific fire protection needs, primarily against pool and jet fires. The American Petroleum Institute (API 2218) offers guidance on the structural steel members and equipment that need to be protected against fires within the fire risk envelope. Sherwin-Williams FIRETEX M90/03 and M90/02 effectively mitigate fire risk within onshore facilities.
Offshore Fire Protection
Offshore structures present high fire risk. These structures have critical safety needs for protection against jet fire and corrosion. Due to harsh offshore environments, fire protective intumescent coating systems must be long-lasting and lightweight requiring little to no maintenance. Sherwin-Williams FIRETEX M90/02 has undergone extensive global industry testing to demonstrate its robust durability and corrosion protection for offshore structures.
Cryogenic Spill Fire Protection
The processing, storage, and transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) creates risk for cryogenic spills. These spills can occur as liquid or vapor releases, which are highly flammable. There are two main concerns with cryogenic spills with steel structures: thermal shock and fire — both compromise the integrity of the steel. The FIRETEX M90 series by Sherwin-Williams offers both fire and thermal shock protection. FIRETEX M89/02 is an additional solution for mitigating prolonged cryogenic spill risks.
Sherwin-Williams FIRETEX® intumescent coatings provide durable fire and corrosion protection for the design life of the asset, with little to no maintenance. Fire risk is effectively mitigated within refineries and chemical plants using the appropriate configured FIRETEX system. FIRETEX may be applied in the shop or onsite, making it a perfect choice for new projects or maintenance projects in operating facilities.
