GFX: Sherwin-Williams - from spec to protect
Johnny [00:00:06] Hi, Johnny Pourciau again from Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine coatings. Today we're joined by Shawn Evans, one of our subject matter experts in the bowstring space. Shawn comes to us with 35 plus years experience in the coatings industry. Today, our topic is extending the service life of coatings. So, Shawn, when it comes to the cost of protecting assets in these downstream facilities, how important is it to choose the correct coating systems?
GFX: Today's topic: Extending coating service life - special guest: Shawn Evans - Oil & Gas Development Manager - Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine
Shawn [00:00:35] Hi, Johnny. I'm pleased to be with you here today. And yes, proper selection of a coating system is very important. The first priority is corrosion protection. But additionally, we need to consider the owners expectations and perhaps that may be the best investment for their value.
GFX: Consider the best value for an investment
That could be cost per square foot. That may also be the least amount of time required to limit the disruption of normal operations.
GFX: Coatings to maintain asset integrity and aesthetics
As well, maybe it's the public image. Color and gloss retention, perhaps. Keep in mind, many of these tanks, structures, piping systems may be near the front entrance of the facility or alongside of a roadway adjacent to a neighborhood. Public image is very important to the owner.
Johnny [00:01:25] So, Shawn, what options does an asset integrator have to confirm that they are specifying the proper coating systems for these MRO projects?
GXF: Consulting with a coatings expert provides the most innovative products available
Shawn [00:01:35] The advantage of consulting with a Sherwin-Williams protective and marine coatings representative provides access to the latest products and technologies.
GFX: Product and system recommendations for a specific project
And we provide product and system recommendations within a specification or with a specific project in mind. Technical sales representatives are available at the local level, along with the technical service engineers that support the project and the application contractor at the job site.
Johnny [00:02:03] So, Shawn, basically we can evaluate a process unit or an area to be coated and create a specification tailored for that area, correct?
GFX: Product and system recommendations for how a process influences a coating
Shawn [00:02:12] A product or system recommendation as a result of understanding the process influences put upon the coating, just as we consider the chemistry or the commodity in a tank learning service, for example, we've discussed the owners desire for long term corrosion protection, a competitive value for reduced cost and downtime, and the ability to provide enhanced color and gloss retention.
GFX: Sher-Loxane 800 Polysiloxane - Corrosion protection with reduced downtime and cost, and increased color retention
You know, these requirements can easily be met with our Sher-Loxane 800 Polysiloxane coating. This particular coating is partnered with an epoxy primer or zinc rich primer.
GFX: Two-coat application with the same protection of a traditional three-coat system
Whereas we have a two coat application that will perform and provide the service life traditionally expected with a three coat system, and we save one third of the application time required on the project.
Johnny [00:03:08] So, Shawn, if the existing coating system is deemed to be in good health, we can extend the service life with that coating system and reduce the cost of maintenance painting by choosing the proper service preparation and proper coatings for that area, correct?
GFX: A coating expert can assess if an existing system is a candidate for a maintenance coating
Shawn [00:03:27] Well, Johnny, the process is very straightforward. We can assess and qualify an existing system to determine if it's a candidate to receive a maintenance overcoat. We start with a generic. In identifying the generic, we can select an overcoat product that's compatible. We take various measurements for dry film thickness throughout the asset to qualify that we do not have more than 20 mils maximum DFT so that the coating system may support an applied overcoat. We look at corrosion of the overall surface area, we determine what percent of the overall surface area is corroded, hopefully no more than 30 percent. Therefore, surface preparation and cleaning can be kept to a minimum, followed by the time required to overcoat. And lastly, we look at the adhesion value of the coating. And are there any defects such as checking aligator or peeling?
GFX: Sherwin-Williams Sher-Loxane 800 Polysiloxane - an ideal maintenance overcoat
You know, we talked about the Sherloxane 800. This is an ideal maintenance overcoat candidate as a product that is easily brushed, rolled and sprayed and also it has very quick, dry time. So downtime or disruption of service is kept to a minimum.
Johnny [00:04:51] So this provides an excellent means of controlling your MRO spend, yet managing your assets at a very high level.
GFX: Maintenance overcoating can extend the life of a coating and contribute to MRO savings
Shawn [00:05:00] I agree, Johnny. If you can overcoat an existing system to extend the service life, the savings may be allocated or budgeted elsewhere, perhaps to an item or an asset that requires complete removal and replacement of the system, therefore extending your maintenance budget dollars.
Johnny [00:05:20] Shawn, and this has been excellent information today. Thank you for joining us and thank you for your time. I would also like to say thank you to our audience for joining us today. We appreciate your time as well. Please remember if you have any questions concerning coatings or painting needs, please reach out to your local Shewin-Williams representative. We appreciate you. Thank you again. And have a great day.
