Tournus, France, 11 October 2024 – Leaders of The Sherwin-Williams Company (NYSE-SHW) joined together yesterday with local employees and French public officials to celebrate the expansion of the Company’s Tournus manufacturing site, which produces next-generation valPure® V70 non-bisphenol-A (non-BPA) epoxy coatings to serve customers in the global metal packaging coatings market.
Company expands global packaging footprint with strong collaboration and support of public officials
The expanded facility increases total production space of nearly 70% and contains two new process lines, providing additional capacity to serve current customers and to accommodate significant future growth. French public officials provided significant support for the expansion in conjunction with Sherwin-Williams multi-million-euro investment. Sherwin-Williams received more than €5 million in public funding, including €4.1 million from the French government and €600,000 from the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region as part of the PATRIOTE project. An additional €700,000 was provided by the French government to support this research and development-led project, which required 10 years of development to meet the standards of several global health agencies.
A long-term, effective non-BPA coating
In 2015, France became the first country to ban bisphenol-A (BPA) from food containers. As a leader in coatings technology, Sherwin-Williams had started work on a non-BPA alternative prior to the ban. Today, the Company proudly manufactures its valPure® V70 non-BPA coating in Tournus and other locations around the globe. This product sets the new standard within a rapidly evolving and demanding metal packaging industry and delivers the performance benefits of an epoxy coating without the use of BPA. Developed and tested under Sherwin-Williams rigorous Safety by Design protocol, valPure® V70 is widely used and widely approved. More than 250 billion cans have been coated with V70 since its launch.
The technology also benefits from Cradle-to-Cradle Material Health CertificateTM, which validates the sustainability elements of the Company’s product design by assessing the Material Health category requirements of the Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Product Standard. This independent certification corresponds to an international standard for which these products have obtained the highest level of certification: PLATINUM.
In recognition of its compliance with the most stringent international standards, V70 has regulatory approvals from the United States FDA, Canada, European Union EFSA, China and Japan food contact materials. This includes two positive opinions by ANSES (French national food agency for food safety) in 2016 and in 2020 and pending MERCOSUR approval.
