High-performance Systems Protect New Multi-storey Car Park
Glasgow Forte is a major shopping and leisure centre on to the North East of the city centre, and is currently undergoing a major refurbishment programme as part of a £45 million investment by the owners, British Land. Part of this re-development involves a 600-space car park, improving parking facilities at the site by 25%.
Experts from Sherwin-Williams worked with the main contractor, McLaughlan and Harvey, to develop a system that would provide up to 20 years corrosion protection in a C3 to C4 environment for the car park and 60 minutes fire protection for the stairwells and retail units, which would be required as escape routes in case of an emergency.
Solution
The solution for the car park was to use Macropoxy 400 zinc phosphate epoxy primer and Acrolon C137V2 acrylic urethane topcoat. FIRETEX FX6000 (now FX6002) intumescent passive fire protection coating was specified for the stairwells and retail units at between 800 um (columns) and 600 um (hollow beams) with Acrolon C137V2 (100 um) again being the topcoat.
Outcome
The recommended system should protect the 8,000 m2 of steelwork against corrosion for the desired 20 years while the acrylic urethane gives long term aesthetic protection. The robust FIRETEX system, minimises transport and erection damage, meaning less onsite touch up, allowing completion of the work on time, whilst proving the desired fire protection.
