GFX: Aerospace Design Experts Talk Color and Color Trends
Craig Barnett [00:00:16] Predicting trends and trying to be an expert in predicting trends has always been a challenge.

One of the things I've found in aviation is a lot of the clients are fairly conservative in their design outlook. And so for a vast majority of clients who come through the doors, they're not looking for you to reinvent the wheel.
[00:00:38] They're looking for you to create something that's long lasting, tasteful, elegant, and will turn heads.
Conrad Kothman [00:00:45] Right now, especially with the trends that I'm seeing overseas and the design work that's coming in from over there,

a lot of the grey tones right now are my favorites. I absolutely love the metallic blacks all the way over through any of the silvers and gray tones. I'm able to do a lot with silvers and grays, introduce a lot of depth with those.
Jonathan McCormick [00:01:07] You know, it's interesting, with all the new technology,

with the micas and that sort of thing, that the style is kind of going the opposite direction from what we've seen. So we're actually going to a lot more solid color grays, blacks, monotone colors.
Craig Barnett [00:01:21] But then every now and again, a client will walk through the door with either a crazy idea or with the hope that what they're going to get is something completely new and unique.
[00:01:32] And so we'll spend time really exploring. It's often a lot of fun to just be given a blank slate, although that's the hardest way to do design. When someone says, I have no idea what I want. I want something unique. I want something different that's never been done before. And sometimes that leads to new styles that you hadn't thought of that are very creative. And that quickly set trends in the industry.
Conrad Kothman [00:02:01] I think a lot of times when clients are looking for that where they're not only looking for color retention, but they're looking for that luster, that shine.
Jonathan McCormick [00:02:09] And I think, you know, they're using a lot of pearls, a lot of tri-coat colors, a lot of more difficult pigments to spray. I think that's going to be the direction people are going. We've seen some really interesting coatings out there now that are much more elaborate than they were a years ago.
Craig Barnett [00:02:28] A lot of times colors go in and out of fashion and aviation is a part of the fashion outlook on an annual basis. So those trends sometimes happen somewhat organically. You don't plan for those trends and which is why I can't say to you, yeah the next best big trend is this kind of swirly pattern. It comes organically and it's normally a eureka type moment like, wow, that's really interesting. Let's explore that. And the next thing, you're creating a new trend.
