Life Can Slow Down at the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre

The Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre has the clean lines and angles of modern design. But the architectural elements it shares with the century-old building next door instills within it the weight of history, which makes anyone who comes across it breathe deeply.

The Ballet Centre, and the connected Janey Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, features a historic essence and muted, calming palette. With colors like Rocco Beige, the palette delivers mood without overpowering. As we are pushed to speed up and do more, those classic elements are a reminder to slow down and enjoy everything around us.

The urge to stay centered and turn off that the Ballet Centre exudes makes it a great case study for our Hit Pause color trend. With a goal of helping us recharge and stay centered, Hit Pause is the perfect trend for a world where everything is always on.

The 68,000 square-foot facility houses Ballet West and the Ballet West Academy. The new center features five rehearsal studios, offices, event and entertaining spaces and an expanded public lobby that connects with the Capitol Theatre. It serves more than 100,000 students and teachers a year, and the new space allows Ballet West Academy to quadruple its programs and enrollment. By putting a renewed emphasis on in-person entertainment that involves no devices or screens, the building can help the community slow down.

By using metals and shades with warm undertones, the Ballet Centre feels open and welcoming, necessary qualities for a performance center in the middle of the city. The light finishes and diagonal pattern visually ties in with the brick and terra cotta exterior of the Capitol Theatre.

The building was designed, built and certified with the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® Gold criteria. That commitment to sustainability fits well with Hit Pause, which is all about an appreciation for nature and appreciating what already exists around us.
